Knife Care
We offer both High Carbon steel and Stainless steel knives, and each type of steel has it's advantages. High Carbon steel is extremely tough but more prone to rust, so special care must be taken to prevent rust. For maintaining your blades we offer a variety of products such as handle or blade oil, leather strops, and magnetic knife storage blocks. Check out our knife care and storage collection on our products page!
Blade Care
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel blades are known for the extreme sharpness and resistance to rust, and shouldn't require any oil for storage. If any rust does develop, particularly in wet/corrosive environments, 0000 steel wool should remove that easily.
High Carbon Steel
Some knives such as the Varangian, Auxiliary, Bushcraft, and neck knives come with a black oxide finish which does a great job at preventing rust as it creates a tough surface that protects against oxygen with the oil we've put on the blade. This oil is a one time application, as it'll penetrate into the "pores" of the etched steel to ward off moisture. Should any rust develop, lightly scrub it away with some 0000 Steel Wool.
We recommend a coat of mineral or gun oil for storage for the other high carbon steel blades such as the Legionnaire and Centurion which have polished carbon steel. As mineral oil is food safe it is our preference, however gun oil can absolutely be used, as long as you are careful to wipe it off before cutting something that you may consume. As with the other carbon steel blades, should any rust develop some light scrubbing with 0000 steel wool should take it off.
For culinary blades, with use the steel will develop a unique patina that will begin to reflect the cooking of the person using the blade. Depending on the acidity of the ingredients cut, the blade may start to develop gold, blue, or purple etching which will continue to patina uniquely with use.
Handle Care
We offer a variety of handle materials in our products, and each wood is chosen for its durability and resistance to moisture. Depending on climate/humidity some woods such as Wenge, Bocote, and Pau Ferro may swell and contract, which is a normal thing with natural materials. Once in a while a coating of Mineral Oil keeps the handle in good shape and should prevent it from cracking, but this may not even be necessary. Stabilized woods such as those on chef knives should hold up well against moisture but can benefit from a light coat of mineral oil from time to time.
